A collection of papers relating to James Copeland, and the Copeland family. They include letters to James, Hugh and Rev. William Copeland, two small notebooks of James Copeland, one of which is a diary of his journey from Ireland to New York (1848), various documents including those pertaining to James Copeland's appointment as Licensing Justice of Brandy Creek (1876). Other groups include a manuscript biography of Elizabeth Copeland, and the diary of Jane Allen written on board the "Light of the Age" (1855).

J. Isaac Copeland (1910-1995), a native of Clinton, S.C., was graduated from Presbyterian College in 1931. Copeland then entered George Peabody College for Teachers in 1932, where he earned a B.S. in Library Science and an M.A. in history. In 1936, Copeland became the library director at Furman University. He returned to George Peabody College in 1942 and remained there for more than six years.
